Understanding Our DNA

UK scientists have launched the Synthetic Human Genome (SynHG) project to better understand how DNA functions and develop new medical therapies. Spearheaded by Prof Jason Chin at the MRC’s Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, the five-year initiative aims to build long stretches of synthetic human genetic code and insert them into living cells to examine their operation. The project includes collaboration from several UK universities and builds on recent achievements like synthesizing the E. coli genome. Understanding the “dark matter” of our genome could unlock treatments for various diseases, including therapies involving virus-resistant cells or synthetic mitochondria to prevent inherited disorders. The initiative also incorporates a parallel effort to study ethical and societal implications, led by Prof Joy Zhang. Experts like Prof Iain Brassington highlight both promising applications and potential risks, such as environmental concerns from engineered bacteria and ethical dilemmas surrounding designer babies. While practical applications may be years away, the project represents a significant step in synthetic biology and genetic research
